Hello, everyone, My name is Mrs. Civello and this is my second year teaching 6th grade ELA at St. Agnes Cathedral School. I am very excited to meet, grow, and learn with our 6th graders this year. I spent my summer in Montauk with my husband, daughter, and son. We had lots of fun in the sun and sand at the beach. We even saw whales 50 yards from the shoreline. It was a sight to behold!
I went to Catholic school and so did both of my children. I strongly believe in Catholic education where children are nourished mind, body, and soul! I have been teaching middle school ELA for the last 16 years in both the public and private sectors.
This year no doubt will be an awesome one, regardless of the new challenges brought upon us. I strongly believe that each student is born with innate gifts and talents. It is my goal for all students to discover their individual gift, nurture it, and watch it blossom.

Students should check Google Classroom daily for homework, announcements, and classroom resources.
Be prepared to be immersed in literature, writing, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary on a daily basis. I promise you that your ability to read and write will grow exponentially this year. The outstanding news is that most of you will grow a deeper appreciation of the written word. By June, you will be able to read and write with much more ease, confidence, and sophistication.
Please select a favorite book for the month of September since you will be expected to read an independent book each night for 30 minutes. This month will be a free choice. However, in the upcoming months, you will be assigned a specific genre. In class, we will be focusing on close reading and annotating skills. In writing this month, we will be developing a personal narrative. We will acquire and practice grammar and vocabulary in our workbooks.
Courage
Definition
The Latin Root of courage is cor, meaning heart, the seat of our emotions. Originally courage had a different definition from how it is used today. Nowadays, Courage involves making good choices in the face of fear or obstacles. Its another term for bravery. Remember bravery doesn't mean the absence of fear, it means we do not let fear hold us back from exploring new opportunities, developing our skills, and doing what's right.
In Health, we will work on building new healthy habits!
Some topics will include proper handwashing, mask wearing, nutrition, and developing healthy mindsets which will help us tackle this school year.
God of wisdom and might,
we praise you for the wonder of our being, for mind, body and spirit. Be with our children as they begin a new year. Bless them and their teachers and staff.
Give the strength and grace as their bodies grow;
wisdom and knowledge to their minds as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
